Anasazi Ruins

By far, one of the highlights of any backcountry trip is when we come across traces of the ancient cultures that once inhabited this area. For southern Utah, that culture is usually the Anasazi.

Contemporary archaeologists estimate that the beginning of the Anasazi period was as early as 1200 B.C. They left this area around 1200 A.D., probably joining what are now Hopi and Zuni communities in Arizona and New Mexico.

As a responsible backcountry explorer I will not reveal the exact location of any unprotected ruins. If you find any ancient ruins during your desert wanderings, relish the moment, show respect and leave everything just as you found it.
